‘We love our people’
This is a response to the letter by Tom Beach of Waimea (Tribune-Herald, April 22).
The stock exchange is not staying safe. They only care about their wealthy pockets. You say they are intelligent. Well, they are the very ones who do not have commonsense.
Besides all of this issue, I don’t know why you live in Hawaii. Probably because of its beauty and people. The beauty comes from the people of Hawaii. We care for others and the land. Sometimes more than ourselves. Most of all, we care for our kupuna. To say that they are dying for other reasons than the virus pandemic … you are missing the whole meaning of what Hawaii is. This is why we are obeying the virus rules. We care for our people.
You are worried about economics. Without the people, there is no economics. We have people in Hawaii who need their jobs and are not working. They are sacrificing because they care. They are worried they will have no money. Look it up. The wealthy survived because they could afford to pay for testing. Not the poor.
In my ending remark, if you and others do not like what’s happening, just move where you’ll be happy. Don’t stir up our people in Hawaii. This is the time to reach out and care. You are not the doctor. We’ve faced so much and we survived.
Take your protest elsewhere. Stop grumbling and appreciate those around you who are sacrificing for others. You probably have more than some, who have nothing. Support our farmers and vendors in Hawaii.
You will never change Hawaii. We love our people. Malama pono.

‘Let’s do our part’
In regard to the Tom Beach letter in “Your Views” (Tribune-Herald, April 22), what struck me the most was the example of how conspiracy theories are born — extrapolating from a “webcam” that the majority of us are not “the elite” who know the truth about the coronavirus.
We all are facing a deadly virus that has caused the deaths of 70,000 people in the United States alone. It is about the virus.
Instead of blaming the “elite,” let’s do our part by following guidelines, push for testing and open in a safe, responsible way.
I am horrified that Tom believes it is OK for “those people that are already sick and/or retired are just part of those who cannot be saved.”
I am very grateful I am not part of his family.
