Not even a ruined senior track and field season could keep Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Chenoa Frederick out of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor.
And it wouldn’t be a class of inductees without another Konawaena girls basketball player.
Frederick and the Wildcats’ Caiyle Kaupu were elected Sunday from the BIIF along with 10 other of the state’s best athletes. Each will receive a $2,000 college scholarship from Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Despite having only three seasons to compete because the coronavirus pandemic wiped out spring sports, Frederick leaves as one of the most decorated track and field athletes in Hawaii high school history, owning eight gold medals, including four as a junior. She joins former Warriors teammate Saydee Aganus in the Hall of Honor
Kaupu joins three former teammates in the club (Celena Molina, 2017; Cherilyn Molina, 2018; Mikayla Tablit, 2018), though at this point the Wildcats should probably have their own wing. Konawaena girls basketball has had nine players inducted since 2004 and at least 10 overall since the Hall of Honor tradition began in 1983. (Mi-Suk Lee, 1999; Nancy Hoist, 2004; Jazzmin Awa-Williams, 2007; Dawnyelle Awa, 2012; Lia Galdeira, 2012; Chanelle Molina, 2016 are the others).
A 13-person selection committee of current and former sports reporters, athletic directors and coaches from around the state used athletic achievement as their main criteria, while also considering character, sportsmanship, academic record and community service.
