There are 47 new cases of COVID-19 reported statewide as of noon Tuesday. That brings the statewide total of cases to 1,757, as one case previously listed was removed from the count..
Lt. Gov. Josh Green said on Facebook Live the state has doubled its number of total cases in a month.
“It took us five months to get to 800, then it took us one month to get to 1,700,” Green said. “So it gives you an idea of the impact, and how quickly things can geometrically increase.”
Green, who is a emergency room physician at Kona Community and Kohala hospitals, said the spike in cases is a concern.
“For every 100 cases, we get 10 individuals that go into the hospital. And for every 65 cases that we’re able to detect, one person dies in our state,” he said.
The City and County of Honolulu now has had 1,419 cases since the beginning of the pandemic locally, Maui County tallied 154, Hawaii County has reported 116 cases and Kauai County has logged 45.
Hawaii County Civil Defense said this morning there are four active cases on the Big Island, with one of those cases requiring hospitalization.
Of the Hawaii cases, 23 are of residents diagnosed outside the state.
Statewide, 167 individuals have required hospitalization for coronavirus-related illness and there have been 26 deaths.
According to the Department of Health, 1,205 patients have been released from isolation as recovered.
