The University of Hawaii football team will open the eight-game season with road games against Fresno State on Oct. 24 and Wyoming on Oct. 31.
The Rainbow Warriors’ first home game is against New Mexico on Nov. 7.
The Mountain West, of which UH is a football-only member, released the eight-week schedule Thursday — a week after announcing that the season would be played this year after all.
The Warriors will have an even split of four games on the road and four at Aloha Stadium.
There is no announcement on whether the fans will be permitted to attend.
Because not all the 12 Mountain West teams are playing eight league opponents, the Dec. 19 title game will pair the two teams with the best winning percentages against conference foes. Air Force is playing against six MW opponents because of previous commitments to play against Navy and Army. Boise State is playing seven league games to honor its game against independent Brigham Young.
“The shift away from a two-division format was necessary to optimize the schedule and allow for maximum flexibility given the various constraints which had to be considered,” commissioner Craig Thompson said, in a news release.
“Inasmuch as the season begins with an uneven number of conference games, and the possibility exists additional games may be lost to COVID-19 challenges, the procedures for determining the participants in and location for the MW Football championship game were adapted to accommodate a range of outcomes in as equitable a fashion as possible.”
The Warriors did not practice on Thursday in the aftermath of Wednesday’s announcement that four football players tested positive for COVID-19. The four are asymptomatic and in isolation.
