Mae Michiyo Hirai, 91, of Hilo died Sept. 18 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, she was a retired Keaukaha Elementary School teacher with a horticulture degree from Iowa State University, and graduate of Hilo High School. Internment at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl, at a later date. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Wallace Azusa Hirai, 91, of Hilo died Sept. 12 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Makawao, Maui, he founder and former president of W.A. Hirai &Associates in Honolulu and Hilo, head of the former C. Brewer &Company’s Engineering Department in Hilo, graduate of Maui High School, Iowa State University College of Engineering and the Executive MBA program at Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, fisherman and a U.S. Army officer during the Korean War.
