Ka Makani look to be in midseason form, though having KJ Walker and Tre Walker around will do that.
The brothers combined for 38 points Thursday night, with the younger one, Tre, leading the way with 21 as HPA coasted past the Kona Stingrays 68-41 at Castle Gym in Waimea.
On Tuesday, the Walkers went for 32 – 19 from KJ – as Ka Makani beat Kamehameha 54-40.
During normal circumstances, KJ Walker, a senior, would be a prime candidate in the BIIF Division II player of the year race and HPA would be battling Kohala for league – and state – supremacy.
Because of the pandemic, Ka Makani will have to settle for this modified winter season that is being hosted by them and Kamehameha. Fans are not allowed to attend.
Joah Gacayan scored 12 points to pace the Stingrays, who fell behind 36-23 at halftime and never were able to recover. Last season, Gacayan helped a balanced Konawaena team finish as BIIF Division I runner-up.
The teams will meet again March 3, and Kamehameha comes to Waimea on March 6.
In a girls game Thursday, Keanu Huihui scored 21 points as Kamehameha opened play with a 43-21 win against Christian Liberty (0-3).
Kamehameha welcomes HPA on Saturday night.
