UH-Hilo cross country runner Leilani Stone made an impressive improvement on Saturday at the Hawaii Pacific Loa campus course.

In the last race of the season, Stone finished fourth in 22:21, but four weeks ago, her time was 23:10.

UHH’s Olivia Jarvis was third in 22:18 and finished as the team’s top runner in two of the three races.

HPU’s Robyn Kaltenbrunn was first in 20:55 in the 5K course. Her teammate, Karen Corona Perez was second in 21:49.

Kaltenbrunn, who’s from South Africa, placed first in all three races and is the Sharks’ best comedian.

On the school’s website, she was asked her favorite food, “Everything,” and why she chose HPU, “I was tired running away from lions.”

The other Vulcans were Emma Heidelmeier, fifth in 22:34, after running 23:03 on Feb. 6; Caitlin Kawaiaea , seventh in 23:04; and Makena Morris was UHH’s fifth scoring runner in 24:22 and 11th.’’

“I was very pleased with how we raced,” UHH coach Jaime Guerpo said on the school’s website. “They all ran their hearts out. We fell short in the team score but to me, that race was better than the one they ran earlier in the season. Win, lose or draw they all competed and did their best, and that’s all you can ask of them.

“It was a great way to finish the spring season and should help us build a base for next fall.”

The women’s team tied Hawaii Pacific 0-0 Sunday and finished the two-game road trip with an 0-2-0 record.

The Vulcans also tied Chaminade 2-2 on Saturday. There is no overtime this season.

Daelenn Tokunaga, a Rainbow Wahine transfer, had five shots, including three on goal for the Vulcans.

UHH goalie Viviana Poli had one save.

In the men’s game, Paul Enzigmueller scored on a penalty kick after a Vulcan committed a foul in the penalty box with 10 minutes left.

The Sharks improved to 2-0 in the shortened spring season while the Vulcans fell to 1-1.

It was a physical game with 19 fouls called, three yellow and one red card on HPU and a yellow on UHH.

The Vulcans had eight shots, including two on goal by Kalei Tolentino-Perry and Bo Antonissen.
