The National Weather Service predicts a 50% chance of scattered showers in Hilo for most of the remainder of the week, with the heavy rains of the past several weeks seemingly coming to an end.
According to preliminary data from the NWS, Hilo received nearly 5 inches of rain since Friday, the majority of which fell Sunday and Monday. Other windward sites on the island, such as Laupahoehoe and Papaikou, received more than 3 inches of rain on Monday alone.
So far, 23 inches of rain fell on Hilo this month, more than a foot more than the March average. However, the month is still far from the wettest on record: In 1980, 42 inches of rain fell on Hilo by March 23.
