The UH-Hilo baseball team swept a doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium, winning a crazy first game, 12-7, after scoring five runs in the ninth without a hit.
In the ninth, tied 7-7, Chris Aubort and Casey Yamauchi drew walks of Daniel Cortez, who was pulled for Shane Adams.
Adams walked Jaryn Kanbara to load the bases and Kobie Russell to force in a run. Then Yamauchi scored on a wild pitch.
It was suddenly 9-7, UHH ahead. Then it really got wild. Jason Shiigi replaced Adams and pinch hitter Braeden Coloma walked, and Kanbara scored on a wild pitch.
Mason Campbell reached on a fielding error, and Russell scored. It was 11-7 and HPU’s misadventure was not over yet.
Campbell advanced to third on a balk, and pinch runner Brett Komatsu scored on a balk.
The ugly inning tally: four walks, two wild pitches, two balks, and five runs, no hits, and one error.
Cortez got stuck with the loss. He allowed two runs on two walks in one inning. Adams didn’t record an out and allowed two runs on two walks. Shiigi didn’t record an out and allowed a run, threw two wild pitches.
Zakaia Michaels came in and finished the ninth. He wasn’t charged with a run but had a strikeout and a balk.
Brandyn Lee-Lehano pitched 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief and struck out three for the win. John Kea closed up with a scoreless inning. Aaron Davies started and allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings. Takashi Umino followed and got two outs, and Cody Hirata pitch 1 1/3 innings and gave up three runs.
Russell batted 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Yamauchi had two hits and two RBIs, and Gaven Palagonia had two hits for the Vulcans.
In Game 2, UHH won 7-5, behind a four-run rally in the sixth inning of a seven-inning game.
In the six, Rustin Ho had a two-run single, Trey Yukumoto an RBI single, and Yukmoto later scored on a passed ball.
That was enough support for Christian DeJesus, who pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs in the win. John Kea fired 1 2/3 innings for his second save.
Yamauchi and Ho had two RBIs each for UHH (7-5, 7-2 PacWest).
Nico Gomez pitched 5 1/3 innings in the loss for HPU (2-11, 2-7).
The teams play another doubleheader at 11 a.m. Sunday to close the six-game series.
Softball
The Vulcans split a doubleheader against Chaminade, which saw Valerie Alvardo’s 29-inning consecutive scoreless streak snapped and UHH’s eight-game winning streak broken in Game 2 at Howard Okita field.
In the 6-3 Game 1 win, the Silverswords scored three runs in the first inning, but the Vulcans scored four runs in the sixth, keyed by Taisha Bratton’s three-run homer.
Darian Obara batted 2 for 3 and no other Vulcan paired hits.
Alvardo (4-0) pitched seven innings and allowed three runs for the win. She walked four and whiffed nine.
Madelyn Stockslager also went the distance and gave up six runs in seven innings.
In Game 2, Chaminade edged UHH 2-1, scoring two runs in the third inning.
Kiarra Lincoln batted 3 for 4 for the Vulcans, who left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings.
Sara Bhatt (3-1) went six innings and gave up two runs in the loss.
Taylor Genera (3-1) pitched seven innings of one-run ball for the win.
UHH (8-1, 8-1, PacWest) and Chaminade (7-5, 7-5) comeplete the four-game series with a doubleheader at noon Sunday.

The Vulcan women posted two wins against Chaminade on Senior Day at the Fairmont Orchid Resort.
UHH (7-5), won the morning and afternoon matches by 7-0 scores.
