During the week of June 28-July 4, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were younger than 21. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, seven each; Puna, three; Hamakua, two; and South Kohala, Ka‘u and North Hilo, one each.

So far this year, there have been 601 DUI arrests compared to 447 during the same period last year, an increase of 34.5%. There have been 394 major accidents so far this year compared to 401 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.7%. To date, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities, compared to 10 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 20%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
