Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network’s production of its summer musical, Gilbert &Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance or The Slave of Duty,” opens tonight at Kilauea Military Camp’s Kilauea Theater,

Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 22.

The show includes the familiar “I Am the Very Model of A Modern Major General,” “Poor Wandering One,” and the tune that is now widely known as “Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here.”

“Many of the cast members were part of the production of ‘Pirates’ we did 17 years ago,” said director Suzi Bond.

The cast includes: Stephen Bond as Richard, the Pirate King; Murphy Bierman as Frederic, a pirate apprentice; D’Andrea Pelletier as the beautiful Mabel; Joel Kelley as Maj. Gen. Stanley; Joy Bierman as Ruth, a pirate maid-of-all-work; Ben McMillan as the police sergeant; and Kendra Obermaier and Elizabeth Young as Edith and Kate, Maj. Gen. Stanley’s daughters.

The chorus of maidens, pirates and police includes: Mia Boyer, Fiona Broward, Debbie Campbell, Keokina Freitas, Nate Friday, Ariana Kelley, Alana Kerby-Corbett, Cadence McMillan, Sean McMillan, Sherie McMillan, Toby McMillan, Alan McNarie, Sophia McQueen, Kathy Mulliken, Katie Mulliken, Dawn Pelletier, Drew Pelletier Sr., Drew Pelletier Jr., Eva Pelletier, Yama Radtke, Mark Rawlings, Ray Ryan and David Wells and Malia Wells.

Melanie Oldfather is the music director and Walter Greenwood will conduct the live orchestra.

“We are so happy to be performing in our theater home again,” Bond said.

“We need to comply with the current COVID protocols so masks are required. Temperature checks will be done at the door and information will be collected for contact tracing. We will be distancing the audience. The doors will be left open for ventilation so bring layers to put on as the evening gets chilly.”

Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for seniors over 60 and students and $12 for children 12 and under, available at Kilauea General Store in Volcano, Keaau Natural Foods, Basically Books and The Most Irresistible Shop in downtown Hilo. Tickets also will be available at the door.
