To bring Hawaii to a brighter, more sustainable future, residents have a chance to swap out their current light bulbs for energy-efficient bulbs.
Hawaii Energy on Monday announced the second Free Bulb Swap promotion to allow Hawaii residents to trade in old, inefficient bulbs for LED lighting at participating HouseMart Ace Hardware stores on Hawaii Island, Maui and Oahu.
Participants can exchange up to 30 incandescent or halogen bulbs for Energy Star LED bulbs. A little over 33,000 bulbs are being offered statewide.
“At our store, we received several hundred units, so we have a lot to go around,” said Jacob Adkins, assistant store manager of the Hilo Ace Hardware. “We’ll be offering this promotion until we run out.”
For a limited time, participants can also purchase two-packs of energy-efficient A19 standard LED bulbs and G16.5 globe LED bulbs for only $1 each, which are normally $4.49 each.
LED light bulbs use up to 80% less energy than halogens and have a longer average life than incandescent bulbs, with up to 15,000 hours in average usage.
All LED products are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Hawaii Energy remains committed to helping all residents reduce their energy costs. Our partnership with HouseMart helps ensure that LED lighting can be affordable for everyone and made available to more families,” said Brian Kealoha, executive director of Hawaii Energy. “Switching to LEDs can reduce indoor home lighting costs by up to 90%, so we hope this makes it easier for residents to switch to energy-efficient products and start to enjoy a lower electricity bill quickly.”
The participating Ace Hardware stores on Hawaii Island include Hilo, Captain Cook, Naalehu, Keaau, Kona, Waimea, Ocean View and Pahoa.
