Police have identified a 63-year-old man who died Sunday after a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Daniel K. Inouye Highway and Highway 190 in Waikoloa as Oren Mark Wilson of Waikoloa.
Officers responding to a 10:25 a.m. call determined that Wilson was riding an orange 2014 Honda CB1100 motorcycle makai on Daniel K. Inouye Highway when he ran off the roadway, struck a stop sign, then struck a guardrail and was ejected. Wilson was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m.
Wilson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police believe that speed was a possible factor in the fatal incident.
This is the 20th traffic fatality this year compared to 13 at this time last year.
The Kona Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
