In August, Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network was in production with our annual summer musical, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. After 15 months without being able to do a show, being allowed to rehearse together and perform was a return to some sense of normal for the cast, crew and orchestra. The audience delighted in the show and the ability to go out and enjoy a live performance. COVID-19 protocols were in place with social distancing, mask wearing, and temperature checks and sanitation stations at the door.

The show was performed by a cast of 31, led by Murphy Bierman, D’Andrea Pelletier, Joel Kelley. Stephen Bond, Kendra Obermaier, Joy Bierman, Ben McMillan, Nathan Friday and Elizabeth Young. They performed with a 15-piece orchestra under the baton of Walter Greenwood. Sets were designed by Jonathan Sudler, with costumes coordinated by Dawn Pelletier and millinery by Katie Mulliken. Suzi Bond directed the show with Melanie Oldfather providing the musical direction.
Due to protocols and the rising spike in coronavirus cases, KDEN was restricted in the number of people who could attend the performances. KDEN received numerous calls from people who wanted to attend, but for obvious reasons, were unable. Many expressed their disappointment that they would miss this well-loved show.
The good news is that KDEN recorded the show and is now making it available to the general public for free. Watch the show at www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6q-y-MUaO0 or you go to kden.org and click on the link.
Upcoming for KDEN, an evening of radio plays with a holiday theme, Dec. 10–12.
