During the week of Dec. 20-26, 2021, police arrested 15 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, four; South Hilo and South Kohala, three each; Hamakua and Kona, two each; and North Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 1,057 DUI arrests compared to 993 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.4%.
There have been 800 major accidents so far this year compared with 762 during the same period last year, an increase of 5%.
To date, there have been 26 traffic fatalities, compared to 15 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 73.3%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
