Lance Kiyoshi Abe, 67, of Hilo died Nov. 9 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Laupahoehoe, he was retired from the state Department of Human Services, a farmer, worked at Laupahoehoe School, where he coached girls’ basketball, and was a member and elder at Zion’s House of Praise Holiness Church in Hilo. Public visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Face masks and social distancing required. Casual attire; no flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by wife, Amy Abe of Hilo; brothers, Randall (Linda) Abe of Kaneohe, Oahu, and Mervyn Abe of Oregon; sister, Joyce Yamamoto of Hilo; mother-in-law, Sueno Saruwatari of Pepeekeo; brother-in-law, Bert Saruwatari of Honolulu; sisters-in-law, Lynn (Glenn) Abe of Honolulu, Faye Saruwatari of Hilo, Gail Saruwatari and Eva Saruwatari of Pepeekeo; nephews, nieces, cousins, grandnephews and grandnieces. New variant cause for concern, not panic, Biden tells US

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden called the new coronavirus variant omicron a cause for concern but “not a cause for panic” Monday and said he was not considering any widespread U.S. lockdown. He urged Americans anew to get fully vaccinated, including booster shots, and return to face masks indoors in public settings to slow any spread.

Charles Jose “Carlos” Garcia, 91, of Hilo died Nov. 19 at home. Born in La Jara, Colo., he was a retired chief observer for the National Center for Atmospheric Research High Altitude Observatory, U.S. Navy veteran and member of Young Men’s Institute, Y’s Men International Club, Toastmasters and Piihonua Kumiai, and avid tennis player. Celebration of life service at a later date. Survived by daughters, Carla (Scott) Chitwood of Hilo and Pamela (John) Homa of Las Cruces, N.M.; sons, Steven (Duan) Garcia of Hilo and Thomas Garcia of Las Vegas; sisters, Eva Mask of Parkton, N.C. and Agnes Moser of Deadwood, S.D.; brother, Julian (Debbie) Garcia of West Columbia, Texas; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins.
