Konawaena’s Coby Molina is doing what he can to live up to the family name.
Molina scored 18 points Tuesday night in Honokaa, and the Wildcats the Dragons’ BIIF boys basketball opener in a 69-35 victory.
Molina – the younger sibling of Konawaena alums Chanelle, Celena Jane, and Cherilyn – was coming off a 17-point performance last weekend in a win against Keaau. Haven Hiraishi added 13 points for the Wildcats (2-1), who take a little momentum into their matchup Friday night at Waiakea.
Kinohi Lindsey led Honokaa with 13 points, and Aka Spencer had 10.
Waiakea 52, Pahoa 15: The Warriors used balance scoring, getting eight points apiece from Ryder Cabreros and Jayke Prudencio, on the road to win their opener.
Kailen Kamakeeaina led the Daggers (0-2) with eight points.
Hilo at Ka’u: The game was postponed because of COVID-19 protocols.
Girls
Kamehameha 39, Pahoa 23: The road Warriors broke open a game that was tied at halftime, with Maela Honma’s 20 points leading the way.
Baeleigh Lukzen scored seven points for the Warriors, who pitched a shutout in the third quarter, outscoring the Daggers 19-0.
Florie Tagabi finished with 15 points for Pahoa (1-3).
Wednesday
Hilo girls def. Christian Liberty, forfeit: The Canefire (0-2) didn’t have enough players because of an injury, but they were expected to be able to play their game Thursday at Pahoa.
The Vikings (5-0) got a day off before their most crucial stretch of the season: They play at Konawaena on Friday, host Kamehameha on Tuesday in a game televised on Spectrum16 and tangle with Waiakea on Jan. 28.
