Not all draws feel the same, and Hawaii Prep boys soccer coach Adam Christodoulou would know.
Ka Makani were locked up in their second consecutive tight match Monday, tying Waiakea 2-2 after junior midfielder Tau Khabele scored with about 3:40 remaining in a BIIF contest in Waimea.
Last week, HPA (1-0-2) was looking to put away Kamehameha late, only to watch as the Warriors scored with second remaining in the match. Christodoulou said this draw was easier to take, but not necessarily because it was his team that scored the equalizer this time.
“It was a much better performance,” he said. “We were very disciplined and stuck to our system of play throughout the entire game.
“It was a very mature performance.”
Warriors coach David Urakami saw the same from his side in the second half, when Austin Mohica and Aziah Nelson scored to put Waiakea (4-0-1) in front.
After an acclimation period during the first 40 minutes, Urakami said, “Our boys wanted it more; heart and desire.”
Aidan Santos helped create HPA’s goal in the first half, sending a cross that ricocheted off the back of a defender and into the net.
Hilo 6, Makua Lani 1: Leha Harman scored twice in Kailua-Kona as the Vikings handed the Lions their first loss.
Sequoia Cortes-Medeiros, Michael DeCoito, Ko’ae Pe’a and Chase Kidani also found the back of the net for Hilo (3-1).
“The start of the game, the ball moved crisp, and it was an energetic game on both sides,” coach George Ichimaru said. “Makua Lani started the game well and caused some problems; we were forced to make adjustments and it paid off.”
Aukele Paikuli Campbell scored for the Lions (3-1).
Christian Liberty 9, Keaau 0: The Canefire earned their first win, riding two goals apiece from Tim Costales, Seth Glenn, Joe Glenn and Makala Hayashida.
Josh DeCleene also had a goal for Christian Liberty (1-3). Adam Sako played the balance of the match in goal before Elijah Montrose subbed in.
Girls
Waiakea 3, Hawaii Prep 0: Three underclassmen scored in Waimea as the Warriors rebounded from two one-goal losses with their first win of the season.
Kalia Franklin, Kiralyn Kuramoto and Charlie Silva tallied goals, while Journey Morimoto collected the shutout for Waiakea (1-2).
“They played really well. We just have to continue to build,” coach Steve Petner said.
Ka Makani fell to 0-1-2.
Girls basketball
Kohala 40, Christian Liberty 39: Freshman Mahea Pang hit the go-ahead free throw in the final 10 seconds, giving her 16 points and just enough for the Cowgirls (2-3) to escape in Kapaau.
Kamille Febo-Santiago led all scorers with 26 for the Canefire (0-5).
Paddling
Keaau was the only East Hawaii school to attend Saturday’s regatta in Kailua-Kona, and the Cougars made the most of their trip, winning two races.
Kealakehe’s boys crew kept the Cougars from a sweep, winning its race in 4 minutes, 31.30 seconds. Keaau came in second at 4:35.36, with Hawaii Prep (4:45.42) third.
In the mixed race, Keaau (4:46.01) scored a comfortable win over HPA (4:58.94) and Kealakehe (4:59.70).
Keaau’s girls crew crossed in 5:11.94, with HPA (5:16.14) second and Kealakehe (5:40.42) third.
