During the week of Feb. 14-20, Hawaii Island police arrested 37 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Four were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 17; South Hilo, nine; Puna, six; South Kohala, three; Hamakua and North Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 166 DUI arrests compared to 178 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.7%.
There have been 100 major accidents so far this year, the same as at the same time last year.
To date, there have been seven official traffic fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared to five fatalities for the same time last year, a 40% increase.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
