During the week of March 28-April 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo; six; Kona and Puna, four each; and South Kohala, three.
So far this year, there have been 286 DUI arrests compared to 326 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.3%.
There have been 187 major accidents so far this year compared to 196 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6%.
To date have been 12 official traffic fatalities compared to seven for the same time last year, an increase of 71.4%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
