Merrie Monarch festivities have officially begun with exhibition dances and the fashion show on Tuesday.
Under the direction of kumu hula Meleana Manuel, Halau Ke ‘Olu Makani O Mauna Loa performed dances for an enthusiastic crowd at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
On Tuesday evening, five up-and-coming Big Island designers were featured on the runway at the Hilo Town Market.
Alohiwai, Ua Koko Kollection, Hilo Bae Design, Coconut Avenue and Rooted Together Hawaii showcased their unique clothing designs as attendees frequented food trucks and other booths.
The Merrie Monarch Hawaiian Arts and Crafts Fair begins today at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Tonight, 2,000 spectators will be watching performances during Ho’ike, which is the only night open for a live audience. A virtual stream will be available throughout the competition.
