Kamehameha had its ugliest performance on Saturday in its past nine appearances at the Division II state baseball championships, a bitter pill to swallow for the seven seniors.
The Warriors have won the last nine BIIF baseball championships and captured the Division II state title in 2016 at Wong Stadium but their last game of the season was something else.
They made seven errors, which led to four unearned runs in a 6-4 loss to Waianae for fifth place Saturday at Wong Stadium.
Makana Carbonel-Mangus pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, one unearned. Dylan Hanson went 3 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, three unearned in the loss.
“It’s a rough way to end with a lot of throwing errors, but hopefully it didn’t indicate the kind of season that we had or how we usually play,” Kamehameha coach Andy Correa said.
Kamehameha scored a run in the second when Keahi Higashima walked and went to third on Jacob Momohara’s double. Higashima scored on Damian Griffin’s wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Griffin went a time-limited six innings, gave up four runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out four.
The Warriors made four throwing errors in a two-run third. Kody Naehu walked and eventually scored on a throwing error. Keahi Ah Sui reached on an error and scored on an error for 2-1 lead.
Kamehameha added two runs in the fifth when Salvatore Martino singled and scored on Jonah Reich’s single. Reich scored on a wild pitch.
It got ugly in the bottom of the fifth for the Warriors, who committed three throwing errors, which led to three unearned runs.
Martino batted 2 for 2 with an RBI to lead the Warriors. Martino had an RBI single in the sixth when he drove in Higashima, who doubled.
The seven seniors are Martino, Carbonel-Mangus, Higashima, Boston Matsu, Spencer Yoshizumi, Jonah Reich and Momohara.
Baseball
Hilo 6, Pearl City 5: The Vikings took fifth. Xaige Lancaster pitched one inning, allowed two runs and took the loss. He also had two RBIs. On Friday, the Vikings blanked Mililani 5-0. Kaynan Kaku had two hits and three RBIs, and Eli Yamanaka fired a four-hitter with six strikeouts.
Waianae 9, Konawaena 1: The Seariders placed fifth. On Friday, Charlie Kuwada and Riki Furuto had two hits each, and Trez Uemoto threw a five-inning four-hitter.
Golf
Waiakea senior Kiersten Saludares placed 15th at the state golf tournament after an 8-over 71-77—148 total, 17 shots behind champion Raya Naka, from Punahou, who had a 9-under 67-64—131 total at Kaanapali on Maui.
Waiakea senior Elle Otani finished 19th with a 9-over 72-77—149 total. Hawaii Prep’s Isabella Rodriguez was 36th with a 30-over85-85—170 total. Teammate Ella Forrest was 51st with a 54-over 97-97—194 total. Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Adrianna Volpe was 54th with a 57-over 98-99—197 total. HPA’s Selina Yoo was 56 with a 62-over 106-96—202 total. Waiakea’s Leiah Kang was 60th with a 70-over 105-105—210 total. Hilo’s Christina Jung was 63rd with a 106-over 132-114—246 total. Waiakea freshman Kiara Kimata was 64th with a 107-over 138-109—247 total.
Waiakea was seventh with a an 87-over 259 total, and HPA was eighth with a 146-over 278 total. Punahou won the state title with an 11-over 211 total.
Volleyball
Kamehameha defeats Kamehameha-Maui 25-23, 25-16 for fifth place. Kaimi Kealoha slammed nine kills to lead the way. On Friday, the BIIF champion Warriors beat Castle 25-13, 25-23.
Konawaena def. Le Jardin 24-26, 25-20, 15-12 for fifth. Tevita Lavaka smashed 14 kills and hit .478 for the Wildcats. On Friday, the BIIF champion Wildcats beat Pahoa 25-11, 25-22.
Water polo
Hawaii Prep lost to Kaiser for third place. On Friday, Kamehameha-Kapalama blitzed Ka Makani 14-2 in the semifinals.
Roosevelt beat Kamehameha-Hawaii 13-3 for fifth place. On Friday, the BIIF runner-up Warriors defeated Kahuku 9-5.
