The Hilo Bayfront will come alive from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, when Arc of Hilo hosts its inaugural King Kamehameha’s Awesome Athletes Inclusive Canoe Race.
“Our vision for this annual event is to create an accessible, exciting and culturally enriched activity for our residents with disabilities, who may never have the opportunity to paddle an outrigger canoe, while also attracting tourists with disabilities who will see Hawaii as a welcoming destination,” says Robert Efford, chief executive officer of the Arc of Hilo, Hawaii Island.
AccessSurf Hawaii is assisting with water safety training for volunteers, canoe clubs across the island are donating equipment, and seasoned regatta paddlers will be helping paddle the six-person canoes, with no more than three awesome athletes in each canoe.
“This is going to be an exciting event for all, and we urge people to come down to the Hilo Bayfront on June 12 to help cheer on our awesome athletes, says Efford.
“We’ll also have live music, beverages provided by Shaka Tea and Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water, and raffle prizes for spectators to try their luck.”
