The word Hana can be translated in both the Hawaiian and Japanese languages. In Hawaiian, the word means “craft” or “work,” while in Japanese it translates to “flower.”
Amemiya and Diminyatz both share a love for Japanese art and culture, and the “Hana” exhibit showcases each artist’s current work, combined with tropical flowers that Amemiya grows at his home in Hilo.
Amemiya was born on Oahu, where he attended Punahou Academy and received a bachelor’s degree in Asian studies from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He was introduced to pottery while working at the U.S. Consulate in Okinawa, Japan, in 1972.
Diminyatz was born in 1961 in California and lives in Volcano. He received a BFA in printmaking in 1995 at the Sonoma State University and MFA in painting in 1998 at the Mills College in California. He has been a lecturer at the University of Hawaii in Hilo and the Hawaii Community College.
