The Department of Education said a chemical odor caused by a leaking container of a cleaning/disinfecting product caused the evacuation of the library at Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School in Hilo on Tuesday morning.
According to DOE spokesman Derek Inoshita, the library was evacuated as a precaution. No students were in the building at the time, and no injuries were reported.
“The school is notifying parents of the incident, and schedules will continue as normal,” Inoshita said.
Inoshita said the Hawaii Fire Department responded immediately, and a HAZMAT team performed a cleanup.
Fire crews determined that the odor was not hazardous, so a campuswide evacuation wasn’t deemed necessary.
