The University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s basketball team closed November play of the Big Island Holiday Classic with a 72-44 loss to the University of Mary Friday evening at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
The Vulcans shot 27.7 percent from the field while making just three 3-pointers and going 5 of 10 at the free throw line.
After a tied ball game a quarter of the way through the first period, the University of Mary extended itself with a 7-0 run and never looked back as it maintained a double-digit lead through for its first win of the season.
Vulcan point guard Mandi Kawaha led the Vulcans with 15 points. Bree Olson and Kamalu Kamakawiwoole nabbed seven and six rebounds, respectively.
University of Mary’s Megan Zander, Ryleigh Wacha, Addison Rozell and Reese Wishart totaled double-digit scoring figures for the Marauders.
UH-Hilo is now 3-2 overall before starting Pacific West Conference play. The Vulcans will travel to Oahu this week to take on Hawaii Pacific on Thursday and Chaminade on Saturday.
The Big Island Holiday Classic will return for three jam-packed days from Saturday, Dec. 17 to Monday, Dec. 19 at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
