Assistant Police Chief Andrew Burian will serve as acting police chief from Friday until Tuesday, Jan. 17, when Benjamin Moszkowicz is sworn in as the new police chief.
Moszkowicz was named the new police chief earlier this month by the Hawaii County Police Commission.
Current Acting Chief Kenneth Bugado is retiring Friday after 33 years of service. Bugado, who served as deputy chief since January 2017, has been acting chief since Chief Paul Ferreira retired on Sept. 1.
Bugado joined the Hawaii Police Department in 1989 and during his tenure worked as the captain of the Criminal Intelligence Unit and the Office of Professional Standards. During his career, he also worked as a patrol officer, a sergeant and detective, and the lieutenant in the Administrative Services Division, where he managed the department’s Accreditation Section.
Acting Chief Burian will oversee the continuity of operations for administrative and line functions, as well as provide consistent performance and service delivery to the Big Island community during this transition period.
