UPDATED 12:49 p.m.

Police have identified an elderly man and woman stabbed to death in an apparent double homicide in Hilo as Jeffrey Yoshio Takamine and Carla Kayoko Takamine, both 68.

Officers responded shortly before 7 a.m. today to a Makalika Street home for an “unknown-type disturbance,” according to a police statement.

In addition to the deceased victims, a 28-year-old man also received what police described as life-threatening injures from a stab wound to the head. He was taken via ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center where he was treated for multiple lacerations to his head and was subsequently released.

The suspect, 21-year-old Joshua Ho, was being restrained by family members..

Ho is a grandson of the deceased victims, who are the owners of Big Island Delights.

Ho was also taken to Hilo Medical Center for lacerations to his hands. Following treatment, he was taken to the Hilo police cellblock.

East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives responded to the scene and are continuing this investigation, which is classified as a first-degree murder, since there is more than one victim.

Detectives are currently working on a search warrant for the residence. Upon execution of the warrant, the scene will be processed, and the deceased will be taken to the Hilo Medical Center for official pronouncement of death.

Autopsies for the victims are scheduled for Tuesday morning to determine the exact cause of death.

According to a police source, the victims are a man and a woman, and a suspect is in custody. The incident took place in a Makalika Street home across from Nani Mau Gardens.

Few details have been released at this point, but police sent out a dispatch shortly before 8:30 a.m. today notifying motorists that a portion of Makalika Street between Railroad Avenue and Awa Street was closed “due to police activity.”

The street was reopened less than an hour later, according to police.
