Compassionate and kind
We just want to acknowledge and thank those in our community for helping and dealing with families going through devastating events.
We recently had to deal with a home emergency and had to call 911. Within minutes, the police were at our home and dealt with the emergency until the medics arrived and took over.
Despite everyone’s best effort, we lost our only son.
The police were very compassionate, consoling and kind, and the chaplain stayed and prayed with our family.
We would also like to thank funeral director Josh Stensrud at Homelani Memorial Park, who has also been so compassionate and kind in helping us through this devastating loss.
Mahalo to all.

Moral basis of law
Rachel Laser’s failure to understand the moral basis of law is glaringly obvious (“Abortion bans undermine the separation of church, state,” Tribune-Herald, Jan. 21.).
The fact of the matter is that all law, whether religiously motivated or not, represents someone’s morality, someone’s idea of right and wrong being imposed on the entirety of the constituency to which it is applied.
Even a simple traffic citation for, say, driving 60 mph when the speed limit is 55 mph is due to someone successfully advocating for the stated limit and imposing it upon a prescribed group of people.
In this example, the motivation may be driven by safety reasons, but no matter — the law’s effect is such that driving 60 mph is unlawful (or wrong), no matter the lawgiver’s motivation.
All notions of lawful or unlawful (right and wrong), are inherently moral in nature, again, irrespective of the motivation.

Fix the roads
Where’s the money for the road maintenance they take out for vehicle registrations?
Our roads are bad. You can’t see the white lines on the side or the yellow lines. Even the crosswalks need to be repainted in Hilo and out at the schools from Ninole going all the way in to Hilo.
Are they keeping the money for themselves?
With all the vehicles they are getting money for, you would think they would use it to fix the roads and repaint the lines.
It’s bad out there. Put the money to use for the roads, not for other things.
Maybe we should have the registration office pay us for when we have to fix our cars because of the roads and all the potholes.
Please do something.
