Nate Sakai, 18, Harrison Marote, 19, and Dylan Rosehill, 19, were presented Scouts BSA’s highest rank of Eagle Scout by Scoutmaster Byron Fujimoto at a COVID-19 related delayed Court of Honor held on January 7 at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin’s Sangha Hall.
Fewer than 4 percent of all Scouts in the United States of America currently reach the coveted Eagle rank since inception of the Scouting program in 1912. Scouts strive to live by the Scout Law which states, “A scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent”.
An Eagle Scout exhibits superior leadership qualities and selfless behavior toward others.
As a scout, Sakai served as Quartermaster, Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader. Sakai’s Eagle Scout Service Project consisted of leading a group of Scouts, parents, and leaders in a beautification project at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. The project involved clearing out several dried hapuu stumps and ohia trees, planted 9 Manila palm trees, 6 ohia trees, 18-Calathes plants, and spreading cinder as ground cover in the areas worked.
Sakai is a 2022 graduate of Waiakea High School. He works as an associate at Hawaii Printing Corporation and serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster for ScoutsBSA Troop 23. Sakai is the son of Kevin and Janet Sakai of Kurtistown.
Marote, whose official Eagle Rank was accomplished on April 13, 2021, served as Quartermaster, Troop Scribe, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Troop Librarian at ScoutsBSA Troop 19 (Troop 19 is now defunct).
Marote’s Eagle Scout Service Project benefited the Panaewa Zoo and Equestrian Center where he led a group of Scouts, parents and leaders in restoring the vegetation around the area by planting 5-gold trees in the zoo’s parking lot, 2-gold trees in the Equestrian Center, 10-fan palms in the zoo grounds, and spreading cinder as ground cover after the palms were planted.
After Marote graduated from Waiakea High School in 2021, he enlisted in the United States Navy where his rank is E-3 (Airman). He works on MH60R (Sea Hawk) Helicopters as an Aviation Ordnance specialist and works with missiles and bombs. He plans on serving a full 20-years in the US Armed Forces.
Marote is the son/stepson of Rusty Marote, James Komata and Eydie Clay of Hilo.
Rosehill’s official Eagle Rank occurred when he passed the Pukahi District’s Eagle Scout Board of Review on June 18, 2021. At Troop 19, Rosehill served as a Quartermaster, Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Scribe, Senior Patrol Leader, and Troop Guide.
Rosehill’s Eagle Scout Service Project benefited the Hawaiian Acres Community where he led a group of Scouts, parents and leaders in constructing and installing two 6’ x 4’ x 8’ bus shelters to protect the community’s keiki from the elements as they await the buses for school.
Rosehill is a 2021 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii.
He currently attends Pacific University in Oregon, majoring in biology on the pre-med track. At Pacific University, Rosehill is an active member of its Hawaii Club, Na Haumana O Hawaii, where he serves as a Peer Mentor Coordinator. In addition, he serves as the secretary of the Pacific University’s Vietnamese Student Association.
Rosehill is the son of Christian and Marisa Rosehill of Keaau.
