Born in Lahaina, Maui, he was a retired Honolulu police officer, security supervisor for Matson Shipping and U.S. Army veteran. Emile W. Wery, 78, of Pahoa died Feb. 11 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired U.S. Army first sergeant, Vietnam War veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge, Hawaiian genealogy researcher, St. Louis School alumnus and held numerous leadership positions in veterans organizations, including senior commander of Veteran of Foreign Wars Hilo Post 2875; president of Korean War Veterans-Hilo; senior commander of Combat Infantrymen’s Association-Hilo and commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart- Hawaii Island. Service 8:30 a.m. Friday, March 31, at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo. Memorial donations to VFW Post 3875, P.O. Box 4582, Hilo, HI 96720.
