Janette Jane Carreira, 87, of Honomu died March 8 in Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was a homemaker, farmer, 4-H Leader and member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Visitation 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 30, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Honomu. Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Mauna Kea Memorial Park in Papaikou. Survived by son, Raymond (Momi Aipa) Carreira of Hilo; daughters, Phyllis Lawrence and Ramona (Stafford) Uemura of Honomu, Nanci (Guy Taylor) Merck of Ewa Beach, Oahu; brothers, Manuel “Donald” Martins and David (Demetra) Martins of Hilo; sisters, Vivian Rice of Texas and Susan (Alvin) Medeiros of Hilo; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; cousins, nieces and nephews. Alfredo Manglallan Gacula Jr., 81, of Honokaa died March 10 at home. Born in Marcos, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a retired welder for Parker Ranch, worked for the former Hamakua Sugar Co., and was a member of Honokaa United Methodist Church. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at Honokaa United Methodist Church. Survived by wife, Teresita L. Gacula of Honokaa; children, Marissa Gacula (Jesse) Rowell of Bothell, Wash., and Glen Gacula of Snohomish, Wash.; daughter in-law, Darleen Gacula of Snohomish, Wash.; brother, Jessie (Helen) Gacula of Keaau; sisters, Imelda Arreola, Pilarina Passion and Cionita Salazar of Honolulu, Annie Isidro of San Diego, Lynda Fernandez of Los Angeles and Rosita Flores of Philippines; six grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. Satoshi “Sato” Sumiki, 85, of Hilo died March 4 at home. Born in Papaikou, he was a retired carpenter for Isemoto Contracting Co., and attendant for the former Smiley’s Service Station in Hilo. Bruce Bung Lum Tong Jr., 70, of Mountain View died March 5 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a fish peddler, fisherman, diver, farmer, hunter and harmonica player.
