HILO — The Hilo High School varsity softball team defeated Ka‘u High School 15-0 in a four inning contest Friday afternoon at Walter Victor Baseball Complex.
The match began slowly. A flyout to Kawehi Augustin and two strikeouts by Kuuipo Kalipi quickly downed the Trojans in the top first, leaving two on base.
The Vikings scored just two runs in the bottom first. Kiana Agpalza singled, then Dahlia Gangano walked — both were soon batted in by Madison Waiki’s double.
After shutting out Ka‘u again, things took off for the Vikings in the bottom second when they scored six runs on five hits and a walk.
The Trojans continued to struggle against Hilo’s defense for the remainder of the game, and were held hitless by Kalipi — who allowed six batters to reach base via walk and notched eight strikeouts.
Hilo racked up another four runs in the bottom third. The highlight of the game was when Valentin hit a three-RBI, walk-off double in the bottom fourth.
Agpalza led the Vikings at the plate, going three-for-three with a walk to score four runs.
The Trojans will look to bounce back with an away match Wednesday afternoon at Waiakea High School.
Hilo will have a brief hiatus until the first Monday of April, when it will host Kohala High School.
