The University of Hawaii at Hilo is hiring several staff members and administrators for the upcoming school year, ranging from executive positions to teaching roles.
Of the 22 open positions, six are within the administrative, professional and technical fields, 12 are faculty member roles, and four are executive roles, including both deans and directors.
“Filling our faculty position allows us to offer more of the classes that students want,” Chancellor Bonnie Irwin told the Tribune-Herald on Tuesday. “It also opens up more possibilities for student and faculty research and mentoring.”
The executive level roles include two dean positions for the College of Natural Health Sciences and the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. UH-Hilo is also hiring two director-level positions including for the Small Business Development Center and the University Library, Director of Learning Services.
“All of the positions are critical, but I would put the Dean of Pharmacy and Director of the Library as our top priorities because the incumbents will be leaving us soon,” said Irwin.
Miriam Mobley Smith currently serves as the interim dean for the College of Pharmacy, and joined UH-Hilo in February 2022.
Joseph Sanchez currently serves as the UH-Hilo Library Director and joined the campus in June 2018.
Both Smith and Sanchez will be transitioning out of their roles by the end of this summer.
A review of potential applicants will take place starting this month and continue into April until the positions are filled.
“Each search is on a different timeline, but I expect much of the interviewing will take place in the month of April,” Irwin said. “Ideally, we like new staff to start in July and new faculty in August.”
The open faculty positions include a variety of assistant professor roles in the fields of nursing, teacher education, geology, computer science, psychology, marine science, biology, aerial information technology, and justice.
UH-Hilo also has requests in the proposed state House budget which could add several positions if approved.
The funding would allow for an increase in security officers, IT support, career advisors and internship administrators, and nursing faculty and support staff.
The budget also includes a proposed $17.5 million for Capital Improvement Projects at UH-Hilo, which would help renew, improve and modernize certain aspects of the campus.
“Because UH-Hilo is a small campus, our new employees can be part of building new things, designing curriculum, participating in forwarding the strategic plan, and generally shaping the kind of career they want in higher education,” Irwin said. “There are many research opportunities, and opportunities to work in the community.”
