HILO — Registration is open for the 2nd annual King Kamehameha’s Awesome Athletes Inclusive Canoe Race.

Individuals with disabilities (Awesome Athletes) are invited to register to participate in the race — which will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 4 — and volunteers are also encouraged to sign up.

Hawaii’s outrigger club for disabled athletes, ‘Ohana Wa’a Laulima, is partnering with the Arc of Hilo and Operation Sammy Muscular Dystrophy to host the race in Hilo Bay.

The race enables athletes of all levels of canoe paddling ability to participate in the state’s official sport while challenging themselves.

‘Ohana Wa’a Laulima — an officially recognized non-profit organization — is dedicated to connecting experienced paddlers and specialized support staff with disabled athletes in biweekly training sessions throughout the year, culminating in this celebratory sporting event.

Based on the success of the first Awesome Athletes race in 2022, the June 4 event will draw dozens of participants who have physical, intellectual or developmental challenges — plus many supporters and volunteers.

Back on land, there will be live music on the beach, prize giveaways, community organizations VIP appearances — as well as a silent auction with great items up for grabs by the highest bidder.

The silent auction will raise funds for the club’s ongoing operations, and the public is encouraged to participate.

Anyone who wants to volunteer at the event — and any others who may be interested in joining the race as participants — are encouraged to register as soon as possible by contacting Ian at ohanawaalaulima@gmail.com.

The deadline for volunteer signups and registration for race participants is April 30.
