The speed limit between North Ala Road and Old Volcano Road in Kurtistown along Volcano Highway (Highway 11) has been restored to 45 mph, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The change became effective today, with new signs designating the change to 45 mph in both directions. The speed limit was reduced to 35 mph on Jan. 23.

After collecting traffic data and input from the community, DOT reinstated the previous speed limit.

According to a DOT statement, “This change will improve traffic flow through the area at an appropriate speed for the rural context of this section of highway.”

Many commuters had expressed frustration with the speed limit reduction and that it was changed without more public input.
