HILO — Hilo High School’s boys varsity volleyball team got back in the win column Wednesday night, downing Waiakea High School 3-1.

With this victory, the Vikings maintained a firm hold on the No.2 standing in BIIF Division I — which was put in jeopardy after Hilo suffered two straight losses in the past week to Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i.

The pair of rivals struggled back and forth in the first set, with Waiakea briefly maintaining a small lead. In the end, Hilo pulled away to win the set 25-19.

The Vikings won the second set 25-20 to put the Warriors on their heels.

Waiakea held on in the third set, edging Hilo and extending the set to eventually win 29-27.

In the fourth set, the Vikings put the nail in the coffin with a dominant, 25-16 win.

Both teams will play their next outings this coming Wednesday.

Hilo will host Kealakehe High School, while the Warriors will play away at Kea‘au High School.

Just over two weeks remain until the Division I semifinals, which will take place April 24th — location TBA.

Including the upcoming Wednesday test, Waiakea has four games remaining — two of which it will host.

The Vikings have two games remaining, and Wednesday’s match against the Waveriders will be its final home game.

Four matches remain for KSH — at home against Waiakea on Saturday the 15th, awat at Kea‘au the following Monday, senior night against the Cougars two days later and away at Waiakea’s senior night on April 21st.

The reigning BIIF Division I champions will be poised to enter the Island championships in the No.1 seed if they can win all four of their upcoming outings.

The win against HPA put Konawaena among the top teams in Division II — alongside Christian Liberty Academy and Pahoa High School.

Ka Makani will play its senior night on Wednesday against Ka Umeke Ka‘eo, then will take on CLA two days later in a test that could put HPA back among the top standings.
