The next general (and annual) meeting of the League of Women Voters of Hawaii County will be held in person and via Zoom at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Puna in Hawaii Paradise Park.
Doug Meller’s presentation will address a topic that is at the core of LWV’s promotion of democracy: Transparency in government.
Specifically, Meller will touch upon some key aspects of the policy and legislative underpinnings of the state Sunshine Law and Uniform Practices Act, together with their actual implementation of challenges and shortcomings.
Meller was born and lived most of his life in Honolulu. He possesses a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of California at Riverside and a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Hawaii.
Prior to his 2009 retirement, at various times he was employed by the state Department of Transportation’s Highways Division, engineering consulting firms, city departments, legislators, University of Hawaii, a nonprofit environmental advocacy organization, and, in his own words, “(not voluntarily) by the U.S. Army.”
Meller now spends his time “tilting at windmills, boogie boarding, growing orchids, and writing gonzo testimony for the (League of Women Voters) State Legislative Committee.”
