Big Island Pop Warner honors scholars
Last week, Big Island Pop Warner held its 2023 Scolar Banquet to honor its awardees.
The awardees included two Top Regionals Scholars — Maiya and Kennedi-Grace Magaoay — who will each receive scholarships from Pop Warner National Little Scholars and a separate scholarship from Big Island Pop Warner.
“This year was extremely special as it’s our first banquet after the pandemic and after losing our very dedicated and loved Scholar Director Brenda Kuamoo,” said BIPW Scholastic Coordinator Krystle Umeda.
This banquet also honored All-American Scholar award recipients from the 2021 and 2022 seasons — which included Christian Jamile, Brennan Nishihara, Damien Taaca, Kaaipohaku Brown, Keali’ipono Miller, Keanu-Noel Gebin, Kolonahe Moniz, Kaiao Angeleo, Marxon Medeiros, Christian Pacheco, Hapaki Moniz, Hunter Ikeda, Joziah Bertelmann, Kinohi Hulama, Oshen Ruis and Tanonatoa Muskat.
Those interested in donating to the BIPW scholarship fund can contact Umeda at Scholastic@bipw.org and BIPW Treasurer Kristina Tolentino at Treasurer@bipw.org.
Correction
In Friday’s article about the Konawaena High School varsity baseball game at Kamehameha Schools – Hawaii, it was stated that “Braden Gomes and Kydyn Nakamura got things started with singles,” in the bottom fifth inning.
Shiloh Santos went in as a pinch hitter for Gomes in this inning, and batted in place of Gomes for the remainder of the game.
This misindentification was due to an erroneous reading of the game’s scorecard.
