Monday was the first round of HHSAA girls water polo state playoffs.
Hawai‘i Prep played against Roosevelt High School at Kona Community Aquatic Center, winning 10-4 to secure a quarterfinal berth.
Ali Wawner led Ka Makani with four goals, followed by Maile Imonen with three. Lia Craven contributed two goals and Ione Chicoine scored one.
Roosevelt’s four points were evenly distributed between Faith Keola, Jayzlyn Tomisa, Kimberly Cassens and Jaeci Oba.
HPA will play at No. 1 seed Kamehameha Schools – Kapalama on Thursday night. If Ka Makani loses, it will continue in the fifth-place consolation bracket.
Also on Monday, Waiakea High School’s team traveled to O‘ahu — where it fell 15-5 to Kaiser High School.
La‘akea Grace Nakoa-Oness and Kaopualani Puniwai-Ganoot each scored two goals for the Warriors, and Abigail Keith scored one.
The Cougars were led by Kimie Ginoza, who scored eight goals.
The loss knocked Waiakea out of the playoff bracket, ending its postseason. The Warriors end their season as BIIF’s third-place finisher, with a 6-6 regular season record.
BIIF Champion Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i will begin tournament play in Thursday’s quarterfinals, where it will face Punahou High School.
Punahou defeated Kapolei High School 15-2 on Monday.
The fourth first-round matchup saw Mililani High School defeat Lahainaluna High School 14-9.
