Tropical Storm Calvin far away, but moving toward Central Pacific

National Weather Service map Tropical Storm Calvin continues westward and, on its current track is expected to cross into the Central Pacific Basin late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

Tropical Storm Calvin is moving westward toward the Central Pacific Basin, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

At 5 a.m. Hawaii time, the center of Calvin was 2,075 miles east-southeast of Hilo, moving westward at 16 mph.

The storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center.

Additional strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Calvin is forecast to become a hurricane on Thursday.

On its present track, Calvin is expected to cross into the Central Pacific either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
