The Summer Jam is back to promote health and wellness with lots of fun next week.
The 9th annual Summer Jam will feature the Ohana Health Fair and the Hawaii’s Strongest Man & Woman competition at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29.
The event is hosted by the Big Island Substance Abuse Council for the promotion of health and wellness with fun activities for keiki.
One side of the civic will house the Ohana Health Fair, where several vendors will be giving out health information from a variety of public, private and nonprofit businesses. The other side will be dedicated to keiki with crafts, an obstacle course, face painting, air-brush tattoos and many other activities.
The day will begin with the annual Bus Pull, which will now be a Truck Pull, at 8 a.m. Team sign-ups are still being accepted until Monday, July 24.
Hawaii’s Strongest Man & Woman Competition and Ohana Health Fair will begin at 9 a.m. and will be ongoing throughout the day.
The competition tests men and women on their strength by requiring them to move heavy objects as quickly as they can and for as many repetitions as they can in a limited amount of time.
Some of the popular events within the competition include log press, axle deadlift, farmers walk and sandbag carry.
There will also be 11 food vendors and surprise local entertainment at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
The Ohana Health Fair will have plenty of information for families to take home, and people will be available to answer any questions.
“The health fair is a way for us to reach out to the community and give everyone the chance to learn what resources they have available to them while having a good time,” said Sasha Payao with BISAC. “Keiki will be able to do crafts and different activities at the event and will have fun things to take home. It’s a great way to engage with parents and guardians that may have questions or need more information.”
The Summer Jam began as a recovery day celebration through BISAC, but was then changed to more of an educational event where they welcomed the whole community.
