BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — St. Joseph School graduate Edgar Barclay tossed an immaculate inning on Saturday during his Somerset Patriots’ 3-1 loss to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
Barclay threw nine strikes on nine pitches, the first immaculate inning in Somerset Patriots history. The lefty relieved Yoendrys Gomez and pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out six.
This year is Barclay’s first season with the Patriots, a New York Yankees Double-A affiliate.
Barclay took an unconventional path toward joining an MLB organization.
He did not play BIIF baseball, and graduated from high school early after skipping two grades.
As a teen, he played PONY League baseball — and threw a no-hitter at the 2013 PONY World Series, striking out a record 20 batters. He also trained with Kaha Wong, playing travel ball for Big Island Wood Bat Academy.
After attending Central Arizona College for one year, he transfered to GateWay Community College in Phoenix, Ariz. to begin his college baseball career.
In 2019, he transfered to CSU Bakersfield, where he struck out a Western Athletic Conference-best 111 batters in 90 and one-third innings.
Barclay was picked up by the Yankees during the 15th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
He started out in 2019 with New York’s Rookie League affiliate FCL Yankees before moving up midseason to the Single-A Tampa Tarpons. In 2021 he made another midseason move, from the Tarpons up to the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades — who he stayed with through 2022.
Barclay is 2-1 this season with a 1.05 ERA and has appeared in nine games, pitching 25.2 innings.
