This week will see BIIF girls’ volleyball get off to an earlier start than previously planned, and regular-season football action continue.
Volleyball
Today at 5 p.m., Waiakea HS’ volleyball team will host Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i for a preseason outing. On Saturday, KSH will travel to Kealakehe for a match beginning at 10 a.m.
Volleyball will come into full swing next Tuesday, Aug. 29 — with all matches beginning at 5 p.m. Hilo HS will host KSH, Kea‘au HS will host Waiakea, Honokaa HS will host Laupahoehoe and Christian Liberty Academy will host Parker.
The next day — Wednesday, Aug. 30 — Hawaii Prep will host St. Joseph’s, Ka‘u HS will host Pahoa, Kohala HS will host Makua Lani Christian and Konawaena HS will host Kanu O Ka‘Aina.
That weekend — Thursday, Aug. 31st through Saturday, Sept. 2 — KSH will host a large tournament including several schools from the BIIF, schools from O‘ahu and schools from the mainland.
The week of Aug. 28 will also see the rest of the HHSAA affiliate leagues begin their volleyball seasons.
Football
At 5 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday), Kea‘au HS (1-1 ovr., 1-0 BIIF DI) will chase a second straight BIIF DI victory — hosting Waiakea HS (0-1 BIIF DI), which will be looking to get in the win column. The Cougars defeated Kealakehe HS 48-21 on the road Saturday, bouncing back from their preseason opener 27-20 loss to Saint Louis II the week prior. The Warriors fell 74-0 at home to defending DI state champ Konawaena HS on Saturday.
Konawaena (1-1 ovr., 1-0 BIIF DI) will look to continue its win streak on Friday night, facing off against Hilo HS in the Vikings’ season opener. Kickoff will be at 6:30 p.m.
Kealakehe (0-2 BIIF, 0-1 BIIF DI) will look to avoid a loss streak, hosting a nonleague match at 7 p.m. Friday against Sequoia HS of Redwood City, Calif. This will be the Ravens’ preseason opener. Last season, they went 10-2 overall and fell in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section DIV playoffs to Santa Teresa — which went on to become the runner-up of the CIF Div. 6-AA State Championship.
BIIF DII action will return in force on Saturday.
At 2 p.m. Kohala HS (0-1 BIIF DII) will host Ka‘u (0-1 BIIF DII). The Trojans and Cowboys will each be hungry for a win after suffering big losses in their season openers last week. Ka‘u fell 26-6 to Pahoa (1-0 BIIF DII) on Thursday and Kohala lost 48-7 to KSH (2-0 BIIF, 1-0 BIIF DII) on Friday.
At 3 p.m. on the other side of the mountain, HPA (1-0 BIIF DII) will host Pahoa. The Daggers will look to start a win streak and prove their stature against Ka Makani, which put up a good fight last week against defending BIIF DII champion Honokaa (1-0 BIIF DII) before falling 13-12.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, the Dragons will host the first of two regular season matchups against KSH. The pair went up against each other in the BIIF DII championship last year, and both teams are looking to take another run at the title.
