KEAAU — Christian Liberty Academy’s girls volleyball team hosted Parker School on Wednesday evening for the pair’s season opener.
The Bulls swept the Canefire, winning by a larger margin in each set — first 25-22, then 25-19 and 25-17.
“It was nice to see how we could play in a competitive situation,” Parker head coach Sharon Peterson said. “I definitely think that we’re better than last year, but we have more to learn. Christian Liberty did a nice job of keeping the ball in play, and it gave us a chance to make mistakes — which we did.
“We have to get better at that, the unforced errors. We have a team that is very spirited and together, which is really nice. We want to learn, we want to get better, so that’s our journey.”
The Bulls were led by the hitting of Nora Goldsmith, who notched ten kills on 19 attempts. Jalyssa Castaneda led Parker’s defense with nine digs, just ahead of Goldsmith’s eight.
Setter Acacia Blyth recorded 13 assists and also had five digs — and Danica Castaneda-Petrowski also contributed seven assists.
Briley Ballard served four aces for the Bulls, and Sophia Scholz had three. In total, Parker totaled 11 aces throughout the match.
Parker’s roster has retained several experienced returners, and has grown from last year.
“We have a couple new players coming in who’ve shown some promise, and we have players from last year that have really matured,” Peterson said. “It’s gonna be a competitive situation of who’s on the court — but, if I can, I’m going to try to get as many players on the court as we can.”
The Bulls will face a road test at 6 p.m. Tuesday against St. Joseph School at the Hilo Armory.
CLA will host its next match, which will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Pahoa HS.
