Residents urged to practice fire safety over the weekend as wildfire risk persists
Big Island residents are urged to take caution this weekend to minimize the risk of wildfires.
While the National Weather Service’s Red Flag Warning for West Hawaii — which warned that high winds and dry conditions presented a substantial fire risk — expired Thursday, weather conditions continue to be conducive for the start and spread of brushfires.

According to a Hawaii County news release, the county is maintaining a state of high alert this weekend to watch for and address any emerging hazards.
“We believe in erring on the side of caution,” said Mayor Mitch Roth in a statement. “Recent weather patterns have led to several fires in the past few weeks that could have been prevented with greater awareness. Each fire jeopardizes the safety of our firefighters and, potentially, our residents – a situation we’re committed to avoiding at all costs. Sometimes, it’s the small actions that can make the most significant difference.”
Residents are advised to limit the use of open flames, fire pits and grills over the long weekend to prevent scattering sparks or embers. Other activities such as welding, metal grinding and grass cutting should also be avoided.
Parking a vehicle on dry grass after traveling is also inadvisable. Property owners are advised to implement essential fire safety measures on their premises and secure loose outdoor items.
While a prohibition on camping has been lifted since the expiration of the Red Flag Warning, campers are urged to avoid activities that could result in fires.
The county will issue notices for any change in conditions.
