KEAAU — The Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i football team has been unstoppable so far, and on Thursday it upped its winning streak to five games straight with a 49-6 rout of Ka‘u HS.
Though the Trojans were able to make some headway on offense and chew the clock, their defense was buzzsawed by the Warriors — who buried them behind a 35-0 deficit by halftime.
KSH quarterback Adam Perry had a colossal outing, completing 16 of 20 passes (80%) for 349 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.
Ka‘u ate half of the first quarter’s time during its opening drive, which ended when Xayden Kama intercepted a pass.
KSH came out hot and quickly scored a touchdown. Perry connected an 11-yard pass to Javan Feary in the endzone around the five-minute mark. Lucas Kay-Wong made the kick, his first of seven successful extra point kicks on the outing.
Early in the second quarter, the Warriors once again drove to the redzone and scored on a short pass. Perry completed another 11-yarder, this time to to Andrew Boshard for a 14-0 lead.
The Trojans were unable to score on their subsequent drive. They punted, and Kekainalu Fuerte returned it 85 yards for another KSH touchdown.
After stopping Ka‘u’s offense for the fourth time, the Warriors scored on the first play of their next effort. Perry and Shiloh Santos combined for an 80-yard touchdown pass, during which Santos carried the ball more than 50 yards.
With less than 30 seconds left in the half, KSH scored again when Perry threw 35 yards to Feary for his second touchdown reception.
The second half of the game got off to a rough start for the Trojans, as Xander Hoopai returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for yet another TD.
Ka‘u finally got on the scoreboard around the nine-minute mark of the third quarter when quarterback Adahdiya Ellis-Reyes connected with Tyson Junior Kuahuia-Fa‘afia for a 41-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion attempt was no good.
The Warriors got their final touchdown with five minutes left in the third quarter when Ethan Bowden ran in a 13-yard touchdown. This was extra satisfying to Bowden, who — earlier in the game — had two endzone runs called back due to holding penalties.
Ocean Nihipali-Session led Ka‘u in receiving yards with 85, and in rushing yards with 29.
Santos made five receptions for 108 yards — trailed by Feary with 97 yards, Fuerte with 58 and Jacobjames Ramos with 53.
Bowden recorded six carries for a total of 67 yards (11.17 ypc.). So far this season, bowden has averaged 5.9 yards per carry.
KSH’s only remaining opponent in its first slate of DII outings is Hawai‘i Prep, which it will host on Friday (Sept. 15).
After HPA, the Warriors will host Honoka‘a HS for the pair’s second encounter. Last month, KSH defeated the defending BIIF DII champs 30-7 on their home field.
Now 1-3, Ka‘u will host Honoka‘a on Saturday (Sept. 16).
