Police said Tuesday they have released 26-year-old Jonah Pohaku Lott Farmer, the suspect in a nonfatal shooting early Tuesday, without charges, pending further investigation.

A 43-year-old Ocean View man said he was approached at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday by a woman who asked for help with her vehicle. The man said while he was walking to assist the woman, he was assaulted and shot by a man police said was later identified as Farmer. The victim then fled to a neighbor’s house to summon help.

The victim said his 2022 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was also stolen during the incident.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment and was later released.

Farmer was arrested later in Kona and booked on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, auto theft and first-degree theft.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the police department’s nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
