Late-season BIIF volleyball continued into the weekend, with several teams getting big wins.
HPA 3 – Ka ‘Umeke 0
Ka Makani quickly downed Ka ‘Umeke in straight sets of 25-6, 25-15 and 25-8 Friday night at Hilo HS.
Ka ‘Umeke, now 1-7, will have another shot at getting a win at 5 p.m. Wednesday, when it will host Kanu ‘o ka ‘Aina at Kawananakoa gym.
This will be the first BIIF varsity girls volleyball matchup between two Hawaiian immersion schools.
KSH 3 – Kea‘au 0
The Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i volleyball team continued its dominant season, routing Kea‘au HS 3-0 on the Cougars’ home court.
The Warriors won in straight sets of 25-4, 25-8 and 25-18 — and were able to give their starters some much-needed rest while their backups got some playing time.
KSH was strong on defense, as usual, combining for total 50 digs. Maela Honma led with ten digs, followed by Ziona Launiu with nine and Shay Beals with eight.
Sofia Quiacusan and Honma led the Warriors’ offense with six kills each, trailed by Beals with five kills. Hali‘imaileauli‘I Kuamo‘o set the Warriors’ offense up for success — recording 18 assists.
The Warriors also excelled at serving, notching 13 aces — with Kamaile Carvalho, Honma and Beals each recording three.
KSH has now moved to 10-0 in BIIF play and 21-5 overall. Kea‘au fell to 1-5.
The Warriors will play their final home game at 6 p.m. Monday against Hilo HS.
JV score — KSH 2 – Kea‘au 0 (25-8, 25-13).
Hilo 3 – Kealakehe 0
The Vikings added another win to their record, sweeping the Waveriders during a road test.
Hilo kept ahead of its host, winning in straight sets of 25-20, 25-12 and 25-17.
Now 5-2, the Vikings still have four matches remaining — the soonest being their Monday away game at KSH.
During Hilo’s last encounter with the Warriors, the Vikings nearly forced a fifth set before falling 25-23 during the fourth set.
After that, Hilo’s two remaining home games will be against Kea‘au — Wednesday Oct. 4 and Friday Oct. 13.
The Vikings will also return to Kealakehe on Oct. 11.
JV score — Hilo 2 – Kealakehe 0 (25-11, 25-11).
BIIF playoffs are rapidly approaching, with the semifinals slated for Oct. 21 and the championship set for Oct. 28.
Kohala 3 – Pahoa 0
The Daggers were swept on their home court Friday by the Cowgirls, who won in straight sets of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-15.
Now 6-2, Kohala rivals Parker school for the No. 4 BIIF DII standing. The Cowgirls’ toughest test lies ahead — facing No. 2 HPA (8-1) on the road Thursday.
Now 5-4, Pahoa has maintained its No.6 standing, but is now tied with Honoka‘a — which it beat last week.
The Daggers will have a chance to claw their way up the standings 5 p.m. Tuesday at home, when they will play against Parker.
