The Nobu Yamauchi RBI Organization will conduct a Winter Girls Softball Instructional League for youth who will be 13 to 18 years of age in the calendar year 2024.
The Instructional League will be held at Andrews Field on Sundays from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. The season will run from Oct. 22-Dec. 17.
Cost is $60, which includes an RBI shirt, visor, and League Insurance.
Players need to register individually, not by team. Emphasis will be on drills to improve fielding, throwing, catching, pitching, base running, bunting, and hitting. Controlled scrimmage games will also be conducted where coaches can correct players defensively and offensively.
The coaching instructors are from Hilo as well as Oahu. Coaches from the Big Island are welcomed to join the RBI Instructional Staff.

Karate championship back
After a four-year hiatus, Kona’s longest running and popular Karate competition returns for its 16th edition. On Saturday, Nov. 4, the 16th Annual International Karate League (IKL) Karate Championship will be held at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona, kicking off at 9 a.m. and ending at approximately 3:30 p.m.
“The pandemic shut down our classes and stopped us from training hand-to-hand for a couple of years,” said Tournament Director Julian Shiroma. “When the restrictions were lifted about a year ago, we returned to training and are now ready to resume where we left off.”
Approximately 100 competitors of various age groups from Karate schools around the isle and the state are expected to participate in this karate tournament.
The tournament features competition in three events — Kata (Forms), Kobudo (Weapons), and Kumite (Sparring) with medals given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, plus 4th place medals in selected divisions.
In addition to medals, competitors will be vying for the prestigious Most Outstanding Karate Competitor Perpetual Trophy and the Most Outstanding Dojo Perpetual Trophy.
The event is hosted by the IKL’s two dojos in Kona. The Captain Cook Dojo is under the direction of Sensei Jenna Shiroma, and the Kailua-Kona Dojo is under Sensei Roland Yamamoto. The IKL, with dojos across the State of Hawaii and various mainland states, is headed by its Founder and Chief Instructor, Shihan (Master) Walter K. Nishioka, who resides in Pearl City.

Autocross event Oct. 22
Join the Big Island of Hawaii Region of the SCCA for an exciting contest of driver skill at the Big Island Autocross on Oct. 22 at the Hilo Drag Strip.
The Autocross is open to all licensed drivers and most cars qualify to participate. No special skills or cars are necessary to have the time of your life behind the wheel.
